Disparities in antimicrobial consumption and resistance to them within a country
To determine the ratio between bacterial Bolivia Email List resistance and antimicrobial consumption at the subnational level in Argentina in 2018, considering the group of beta-lactams as a case study. Methods Antimicrobial consumption was expressed as a determined daily dose (DDD) per 1000 inhabitants. The resistance of Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa Bolivia Email List , Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus to beta-lactams was recorded . The ratio between resistance and consumption was determined by calculating “R” for each region of Argentina, and these data were compared with those of other countries.
As this situation can also occur in other countries
Results The beta-lactams most consumed in Argentina were amoxicillin (Bolivia Email List ) for the penicillin subgroup; cephalexin (0.786) for first generation cephalosporins; cefuroxime (0.022) for the second generation; cefixime (0.043) for the third generation, and cefepime (Bolivia Email List ) for the fourth generation group. The comparison between the consumption of beta-lactams and bacterial resistance showed that there were large disparities between the six regions of the country. Conclusions. The case study in Argentina indicates that antimicrobial consumption and resistance to the most common pathogens differed between regions; This shows that there are different realities within Bolivia Email List the same country. these data should be taken into account to define local activities aimed at promoting better use of antimicrobials, to improve antimicrobial management Bolivia Email List programs and to propose more appropriate sales strategies. in order to prevent and control antimicrobial resistance.
